KITE ( Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education), Department of General Education, Government of Kerala, as part of ICT enabled education set up Hi-Tech classrooms and computer labs in schools. The state made use of these facilities and launched E-Cube English project (E-Cube refers to Enjoy, Enhance and Enrich) to augment the English language proficiency level of students. The three components of E-Cube English, viz., E-Language lab, Samagra E-Library, and E-Broadcast provide personal experience to each student to listen, speak, read and write English in an integrated manner. The comprehensive interactive digital learning experience and the integrated formative assessment and feedback by teachers facilitate enhanced English competency to all.
ELL course content and activities enable students to put into practice the skills and knowledge they acquired in the classroom. The digital content of E-Language lab software consists of illustrated stories and activities related to the stories. The course content is arranged in the software at 4 levels based on students’ grade and English proficiency levels. Each level consists of 10 stories and language learning activities related to all the stories. Stories at a particular level have listening & reading activities and activities such as: drag and drop, true or false, matching type, choose the appropriate answer, assignments, audio recording, video recording and the like. The digital multimedia content consists of print, audios, videos, graphics, colourful pictures, animations and options for audio and video recording and submission for assessment. Formative assessment and providing feedback to each learner are integral part of E3 English digital platform.
Samagra E-Library is a repository of children’s literature books in the Samagra web portal for promoting the reading comprehension, reading fluency, writing and communication skills of students. There are grade specific stories in the Samagra E-Library from grades 1 to 7. The stories in lower grades contain more illustrated pictures and lesser print text. Major themes/subthemes dealt with in the stories are family, friendship, animals, pets, colours, vehicles, fun, play, home, rain, trees, plants, food, zoo, art, sports, science, technology and the like. E-Broadcast consists of weekly broadcast of learner cantered activity based, interactive English programmes screened on KITE VICTERS Channel.
